LabCorp CEO: 'Amazon sneezes, health care catches a cold'

Triad Business Journal asked David King, CEO of LabCorp, about the future of healthcare. 

"At Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (NYSE: LH), the company is working to develop tools “to be transparent and engage the patients,” he said. 

“The role of the consumer is getting bigger, and bigger and we need to recognize that,” King said. 

This is why LabCorp has partnered with Walgreens to open patient service centers at some of the drugstore’s locations. It’s one way the company is seeking to engage with customers. LabCorp is also seeking new ways to use technology, which can be seen with its collaboration with MC10 Inc. to use the latter’s wearable sensors during clinical trials and research studies. 

Technology, such as MC10’s wearable devices, along with analytics and mobile tools are crucial to delivering care, but it needs to be done in a way that it delivers the best value possible, King said. 

“All of these things are very important,” he said. “At the same time, health care is a human business.”
